We know that Barbarus' ability takes "some time" to reach its full bonus.
At first it says:
"Barbarus has cleaved into the Monster causing traumatic damage!"
And as you keep hitting, you keep getting more % dmg bonus on your hits, until it finally says:
"Barbarus has cleaved into the weakened Monster causing traumatic damage!"
I had read it was based on stamina used and that you needed around 500 stam to reach full bonus. I tested it myself and found it was pretty inconsistent.
First, depending on the monsters a vastly different amount of stam could be required. For instance for Dragons and Serpents I got the full bonus on the 2nd hit already (2nd 3 stam hit for Emerald Dragon, 2nd 10 stam hit with Barb behind Dolo on Sapphire Serpent).
For Skaar it was on the 7th 15 stam hit (so 90-105 stam).
For Urmek on the 8th or 9th 30 stam hit (so 210-270 stam).
I got more but I'm not going to write them all.
So Barbarus' power grows more quickly on smaller mobs, from the small sample I got (mobs with more HP require more hits, from what I could see). More examples: Astaroth required more "stamina", and Varg even more.
And second, even on the same mob, I don't always need the same amount of stamina to reach max bonus. As you can see with Urmek above already.
For instance on Samael, usually I was getting max bonus on the 7th 60 stam hit. But sometimes it was on the 6th. And recently I even got max bonus on the 5th hit. And I realized I had done 3 x3 crit hits in my first 4 hits. The same happened once again on another Samael, where I had done a lot of crits from the start.
I tried hitting a Samael with my mini with Barb, and it took 15 hits to reach max damage. So 840-900 stamina, while with my main account it took between 240-420 stam to reach max bonus. The difference is huge. My MH alliance on my mini is much weaker.
So I think Barb's power increase is based on damage dealt (and probably has nothing to do with stamina). Except maybe for smaller mobs or certain special mobs (World Monster, Anniversary Monster) where it triggers on the 2nd hit no matter what, but I'm not sure at all.
Astaroth required between 6 and 10 hits to reach max dmg, and Varg btw 10 and 13 (not much data though), but at the time I wasn't paying attention to the damage dealt.
