So yeah... not going to bother.

You do get a sticker for your over dramatization attempt.
Well, at least you were apparently able to recognize my sarcasm for what it was.

But I see the same nonsense that you're trying to peddle in user forums and chat rooms for every internet game that I play on a regular basis that has an FtP option.

"Spenders have such tremendous advantages over non-spenders. It's Sooooooooo Unfair!"

Bullcrap. These games are run by companies to make a profit. Period. If they stop making a profit, there will no longer be a game to play. Ask any of the people who used to play Zynga games, most of which have now tanked. According to the wiki article, the death toll for those games now stands at 63. wikipedia.org/wiki/Zynga#Discontinued_games

Would you prefer that CA become one of those statistics, or that people continue to pay to play it, as 'unfair' as the advantages they get for doing so might seem to you?

Yes, I actually understand all of the points that you're trying to make. I've been playing CA since I think 2008 or so, but whenever it was that I setup my FB account, within the first six months of when it launched, back when it was strictly PvP and lands - no monsters, nothing else to do, it was just battle and invade, and when soldiers (not Generals) and equipment actually meant something. I've been here for the whole ride.

I just think that your arguments are nonsense. Yes, people who buy Promo Packs that include Skill Points are going to have more skill points than people who don't. And so on. But, you know what - people _buy_ those promo packs in order to _get_ those Skill Points, and other things. There's nothing unfair about it - anyone can/could have got them, they just have to open their wallet. Limiting certain benefits to 'newer players' is insane - let's not only discard a popular benefit, but rub it in the face of people who've been playing for a long time, and tell them - sorry, you can't have that anymore - just the new kids on the block. Yeah, that will go over really well, and keep the revenues flowing in - I don't think so...

As far as demi-prayers go - that keeps people logging in and playing every day. If people stop playing, the game dies. Period. We came close enough to that a couple of years ago - at one point, the forums had gotten so quiet, and we hadn't seen new content in so long, it really was starting to look like things were just about all over for CA.

But, yes, people who are paying more and playing (and paying) longer, will, in fact, have stronger characters and better builds that those who don't, and they always will. That doesn't mean that newer players can't be competitive - the Rare drops from Vargi, Sami, and on forward took care of that. They give newer players gear that is reasonably competitive with the Epic/Legendary Gear that other's spent months, years, and/or boatloads of cash acquiring, but without making they gear they spend so much time working to get obsolete. For example, the new Phantom drops with Divine Power give someone who never had to suffer through that meat-grinder enough Divine Power to be able to fight those monsters (not that I'm happy to see that system make a come-back, I'd hoped it was long dead and gone), but without as much power as the top-tier items that people worked long and hard to get. I never got around to doing an amulet past Force of Nature, because there was no point, as I had enough total Divine Power to overcome everyone's Divine Armor after making it through the Whirlpool/Force of Nature/Heart of the Woods/Helm of Arcane Energies/Armor of Redemption/The Corrupted run, plus Vermilion farming and Baal, although I didn't actually need either of those at that point, so the Phantom Amulet was a nice pickup, but I have no cause for complaint, since I could have gotten a better amulet than Force of Nature had I desired, and none of the other Phantom drops were better than the tougher Divine Power items I'd worked for.

Don't get me wrong - I'm hardly in the elite list of players myself, I just recently cracked level 900, so I'm not laughing down at the poor players below me, or anything of that sort. I've taken several lengthy breaks from the game, and so have missed out on some things, mostly after the dev's changed something in the fundamental rules of game play, something that I _do_ think is unfair, usually to balance out a problem they created for themselves by releasing something that wasn't thought out well enough in advance. Introducing new content to solve a problem that you've created is one thing - saying, ooops, we made a mistake, so we're just going to shaft you because we weren't smart enough to think of another way to solve the problem is something else entirely. I missed out on Aki, something I've long regretted, as I have almost every other limited edition general, and I usually play as a Cleric, but that certainly doesn't mean I think the developers have an obligation to add him or Vivian in as Oracle Generals, or what have you, as I've seen people frequently argue for here in the forums. I had the same opportunity to pick Aki up as everyone else playing at the time did, I was just occupied with other matters at the time, so I'm not going to complain about it. I know I'm never going to catch up with the top players, unless I win the lottery someday and go on an orgy of spending such as CA has never seen, but that doesn't bother me - I worry about what I'm doing with my character, not what other people are doing with theirs. I just play my own game.

Bottom line is, any arguments about players getting too much when they spend money on a game are dead on arrival - the only arguments that make sense are those coached in terms of how will this or that get more people playing and spending more money on the game, and which things are or aren't being done that are causing people to quit putting money and effort into it. The most notable arguments in the latter category being the historical lack of willingness of Phoenix Age to do anything to crack down on people who were breaking the rules through things like blatant use of scripting, resolving the exploit that allowed some people to rack up more stat points than it was mathematically possible to have gained even if you had played from day one, gotten demi-prayer points every day, bought every Promo Pack, etc., and punishing the individuals involved, and so forth. I was on a break when the skill point exploit happened, so I don't know exactly what the issue was, but I know it caused a lot of people to quit playing the game in disgust, as a lot of my Guild's top players dropped out around then, and I heard it was responsible for the closing of CA labs, something else that caused a lot of people to drop out of the game.

Getting back to the items in the Promo Packs that you so despise - those items obviously don't make a great deal of different to people who are already spending lots of money on the game, except for unique items like Aki, but give a strong inducement to a broad range of players who would otherwise not spend much if any money on the game to do so, and thus provides a good sustainable mid-level revenue stream for CA. I admit, I started buying them again recently, after a long break while I was waiting to see if the game was going to tank or not, but wouldn't be doing so if they just gave worthless bonuses like gold, iron, hero crystals, duplicate obsolete generals, and some bonus Favor Points (if you're not buying Favor Points in the first place, bonus FP's don't matter). In regards to your arguments that they're putting too many goodies into them, and need to cut back, the only thing that matters is, how many players would keep buying them if they cut back on the bonuses, not how far ahead in the game those bonus items will or might propel the players who purchase them. Castle Age is ultimately a business, and it's all about economics, not fairness, morality, or anything else. Period.

I used to play several of those now dead Zynga games early on, but started boycotting their games in general, when they started pulling the plug on games that, in there opinion, weren't making as much money as they wanted, because the games were no longer 'hot', and instead setup teaser pages to newer games that they wanted people to to spend money on instead. The older games still had large established player bases, but were maturing and weren't getting that new game surge of capitol anymore, so Zynga just pulled the plug out of excessive greed, and look where it's gotten them. That's why customer loyalty and longevity bonuses like Demi-Prayer points are important. I'll give CA one thing - through all of the up's and downs, at least they've never tried pulling that one. They kept Heart of Darkness running in zombie mode for those who still wanted to play until it could no longer be hosted on FB without a major coding overhaul, that simply wasn't warranted. I liked the grid mode 100x100 battles, and had hoped that would carry over, as amongst other things it made WW more effective, but you can't have everything. It is nice to see that the fresh hands on the wheel this time seem to actually care about the player experience within the game, have and are responding to feedback, and seem to be poised to introduce some actual new concepts, rather than recycling or redoing old content, or simply releasing new monsters in a series, for the first time in more years than I can remember right how, so I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of the game for the first time in a long time.

Final Note to super-mod - if you want me and others to continue to keep buying Promo Packs on a regular basis, don't water them down...

"Spenders have such tremendous advantages over non-spenders. It's Sooooooooo Unfair!"
I'm going to stop you right here.

First because it's mostly TLDR; (although I did skim through it. That's worth half a sticker, right?) but mostly because you couldn't be more wrong about what I'm getting at.

I 100% agree that people who spend money on the game should get some form of advantage. I just don't believe that it should be an advantage that can -not- also be obtained by other means than spending money.

I believe that the primary advantage for any FP buyer, whether they (only) buy promos or not, is saving time.

You can use FP to buy refills. Refills will negate the time needed to normally regenerate your resources, which allows you to farm for items or SP faster, thus saving you time.

You can use FP with the oracle or chests to obtain generals and gear. Buying FP for that purpose negates the time you would need to farm enough FP to make those purchases thus saving you time.

If you happened to buy a promo that contained hero potions or crystals then obtaining those items negates the time you would need to farm for the powders and//or crystals you just obtained, saving you time.

Saving time is a big deal. It's the kind of big deal that people are willing to spend money on and lots of it. You mentioned Zynga and how horrible a company they were/are. This is true. However, you might want to check what exactly people were spending money on. You'll find that they were spending money to save time. In their case mostly the time needed to beg their friends to please send them more crap but time was saved nonetheless.

There is lots of stuff that can be added to promos that saves time. In this game people would welcome things like colored crystals or potions for example. The bigger spenders will also love to get more vanilla hero crystals. There really are plenty of options to make attractive promos that include only content that saves people time.

That doesn't mean that the devs can't add other items mind you. However, if they do want to add those "free" rolls or generals then those rolls and generals should -also- be available to obtain through "regular" game play instead of only being available for sale. Heck... it can even be a lengthy process. Kill 50 monsters to obtain Aki or buy the promo. Which in turn would make the purchase a time saver.

Something similar to that can be done for SP btw. Any time a promo has past the SP in the promo could be added to some form of farming content only for those who did not buy that promo. That makes them available to non spenders and again turns the purchase into a time saver.

( TLDR; ) Long story short, I don't despise items in promos, I don't believe that people (like myself btw) who spend on the game should not get any kind of advantage, I just believe that any advantage that we do get should at the core be nothing but a time saver and not an advantage that can not otherwise be obtained.

(btw, Zynga has -always- been in it for the money. Comparing other companies to them I think is unfair to those other companies. Plus, Zynga has gotten at least some of the bad things that they had coming to them over the years. Something to keep in mind that -if- the devs, new or old, had felt the same way as Zynga then this game would have been gone years ago.)

Edit: I just noticed that you also mentioned demi blessings. I don't want to say much about it as it really is a different discussion but I briefly want to touch on that anyway. Demi blessings were intended as a rewarding players for playing daily. As long as that mechanic remains intact then it doesn't matter whether the actual reward is skill points. Meaning, as far as I'm concerned the devs should set an SP limit of X for the demi's where X is the total number of SP that was available since the day the demi's started. Each player should just be given the difference between X and what they got (likely not possible sadly). New accounts could maybe unlock those in phases every so and so level. Then the rewards for the demis should be changed to include the following, FP, "free" rolls, colored crystals, hero crystals. The old devs originally promised the FP and rolls, adding the crystals makes it a nice set that compliments the possible boosts from the daily spin. Finally, the reward trees for the demis should -also- be expanded with new rewards to make demi points worth something again.

I haven't been on the forums for a while, but am all the same surprised that promos last a week. I seem to recall reading yesterday, that we now get 2 promos a month.

My question would then be, how is it possible that some of my guild still have the Chaos promo showing up for over a month.

edit: promos are too frequent if they are fortnightly, especially if they are a rehash of old ones. Just my opinion.

All 3 of my minis saw the different promo packs that showed up once I reached a certain level with them. When my smallest toon hit level 230 he was supposed to get the second Stone Cold Promo, but the Chaos Promo showed up instead. That was a couple months ago, but maybe that is why some of your guildmates are seeing the Chaos promo. I believe last one goes away at level 250, but idk because I bought the Promo.

If these still exist here is the link to the different early Promos.
