How about a gem or other forgeable item so normal loadouts weren't too compromised?

It needs to be a compromise. Just like any special ability should. Unfortunately this time it's defense against special ability that is the compromise, not the ability itself…

Anyway, it's not reasonable to just add confuse resistance without removing something. A general with ability for it is good in that you then have to take out something else from that defense alliance, to gain confuse resistance (and deflection).

It'd add tactical consideration to 10v10 again, as you could no longer go with confuse mages knowing you'll win if your confuse mages are faster than opponent's confuse mages. You'd need clerics cleansing the mages from deflected confuses too, which would slow down the mages and allow others some precious seconds to do something.
And if you decided to not go with confuse mages, expecting opponents to have resist & deflect general equipped, you would have more warrior power (likely choice) that'd decimate those who still defended against confuse instead of agains regular attacks.
There would be more than one possible way to play 10v10 again.
As usual elandal a more thoughtful response than what I would have given ... Nonetheless we need such a general as a correction for the (substantially , vastly ? ) overpowered confuse
