The highest level you can get quests and subquests to is 4.

I haven't done all quests in the demon realm through yet, but re-started doing all to level 4 from the start. Because I feel that I want those extra skill points you get for completing. But of course if you want to unlock new generals first and also concentrate on battling, you'd want to at least open up all the other realms before re-doing quests.

If leveling up is your goal, do any quest that nets you at least 50% more xp than energy. For lower levels that probably means the Forbidden Forest in the Land of Earth. And also use up your stamina on fights whenever you can, it's not much xp but it does make a difference. Dragons are great for that, even if you don't kill them each hit gets you xp and cash, and a good chance for demi points.

Ok, now should I try and level up s quickly as possible or stay at a moderate pace?

I'd say that depends on how much time you'll have to spend on the game once you're at a higher level. After level 80, everybody higher than you can attack you, no limits, so you want to be strong by then, or be able to level up quicker to get stronger. If you level really slowly, you'll have more days till you reach that level, as a result, you can get more daily blessings to up your attack/defense or whatever else you choose.
I went for quick levelling personally, because I just didn't ahve the patience for slow progress *lol*

I'm a slow leveler now. But in the end, does it really matter if you level up slowly to 80? If you were built for leveling and got to level 80 quickly, you would run the gauntlet, true, but you would also continue leveling quicker and could pump more points into attack and defense. While I'm here daily getting one point in attack or defense, you could be over level 80 getting five, ten or fifteen skill points a day. And eventually I'll be a level 80 and someone who leveled quickly will be over 100 and could theoretically kick my butt because they now daily pump 15 points into attack or defense.
The only thing you'll suffer in then, is income and perhaps dueling equipment. You will probably loose more battles, but you'll keep leveling and be able to pump out more skill points. I will have 500 Knight Heroes and Armors and Auras, but so will every other 100+ combatants. Most of my points are in defense, so I can pick my fights, while withstanding the attacks of others.

Interesting. Is there a list of how much experience it takes for each level?

Depends on what you want out of the game. This is a very brief guide;
If you want to level up quickly and do quests:
expect to get your backside slapped on a regular bases when you reach a higher level, particularly when reaching levels 50, 60, and 70 (if you make it that far). Then become totally frustrated and leave the game.
If you want to battle:
dont do any quests or fighting for 85 days. Instead visit the Azeron demi (via the Oracle) every 48 hours for 42.5 days to earn the Sword of Redemption and accrue 22 stamina. Then visit the Aurora demi (via the Oracle) every 24 hours for 42.5 days to earn the Moonfall Amulet. During this period recruit players to your army, buy land to generate income and equip each of your army members with the best weapons/amour/magic.
After earning skill points from leveling up think about where to put then. If you want to get your backside slapped, put it into energy. If you want to fight, put it into Attack and Defence and Stamina. If you follow the 85 day strategy, then put skill points into Attack, Defence and Energy.
(Skill points can also be earned from completing a quest level. )
